ISLAMIC CUSTOMS

     Assalamualaikum..

Islam is not confined merely to devotional and legal matters but embraces criteria and values, attitudes and customs in all areas of  human concern.

Custom or "Adab" in arabic terms denotes a habit, an etiquette, a manner of conduct derived from people considered as models.

The Islamic customs or "Adab Al-Islam" covers economic, political and devotional activities as well as manners relating to everyday human exhanges and routine and is derived from the Quran and the Sunnah (The Prophet Muhammad's deed, words and indirect commandments) and is therefore divinely inspired.

General principles of Islamic customs are not subject to historical change. But conditions do change. The means for deriving rules for new problems in new situation are provided for within Islam through "Ijtihad".  "Ijtihad" is the disciplined use of independent individual reasoning to draw the necessary conclusions in accordance with the essence and spirit of Islam and in the adherence to its immutable general principles. Thus through faith and diligence of qualified scholars, the details of Islamic teachings can respond effectively to the challenges of historical change.

Islam influences a Muslim's conduct from the moment he rises until the moment he retires for the night. These influences vary a degree i.e what is permitted, what is recommended, what is disapproved, what is obligatory and what is forbidden. However, there is a flexibility. For instance what is forbidden under one set of conditions may become under another, exceptional set of conditions , permissible or even  obligatory. For instance during the month of  Ramadhan, (in the Muslim calendar) it is a primary obligation for all Muslims to fast throughout the month, but Islam, understandings the vicissitudes of travelling, exempts the traveller from fasting, But he has to make up for the days that he did not fast when he is able to do so. Similarly, women who have recently given birth or those seriously ill are exempted from fasting. Thus the teachings and instructions of Islam are in fact, fully congnizant of human nature and human needs whereby Islam acknowledges the realities of life and deals with them in the most practical way.

Islamic customs also create common understanding among Muslims. They form a universal culture which gives shape and meaning to local cultures throughout the world, in its contribution to the unity of Muslims people who belong to different races, speak different languages and inhabit different parts of the world. For instance the local culture may well differ from one islamic community to another, but by contrast, the systems of prayers, greetings, dietary restrictions (e.g on alcohol) ,the practices of haram (what is forbidden) and halal (what is permitted) the belief in the basic principles and pillars of Islam are elements of  the universal Islamic pattern. For instance the cooking method of  an Indian Muslims may differ from a Malay, but the restrictions are still the same, For instance each of them are prohibited from consuming and touching pork or pork products like lard.

In other words, the local variations (e.g. in national dishes or in dressing) are important that they distinguish one group of Muslims from another, as we are created in different nations. The Quran says that we may know one from another-but they are completely insignificant in the sense that they do not diminish the Muslim character and Muslim identify of the particular group.
